This week custom-designed street furniture will be installed in Myrtle Avenue tree pits. Nineteen local artists were chosen to design panels for tree guards. According to the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, “Designs range from graphic patterns to skylines to maps, and some even reference the former Myrtle Avenue elevated train.” At the end of this month, 20 new tree guards and 20 new tree guard benches will line Myrtle Avenue between Washington Park and Classon Avenue. A lot of thought was put into which trees got the special treatment: “Young trees were prioritized, and where possible, all trees on an entire block face will receive tree guards to maximize the visual effect. Whenever possible, tree pits near bus stops will receive a tree guard bench to provide seating for waiting passengers.” Sounds like a pretty great addition to the avenue.
