Brownstoner Garden: Removing the Chain Link
Our garden team got to work yesterday ripping out the old chain link fence. We’ve gotten to be quite friendly with our neighbors to the north and are coordinating our garden reno with theirs (at right in the top photo), sharing a contractor and some materials. That’s pretty similar.
Under $7K all in, fence and landscaping, etc. We’re more like you than you can possibly imagine. In fact, we’re more like you than you are!
What’s your estimated budget…if you don’t mind us asking…in other words, is Brownstoner is just like Us?
for now, we’ll only do herbs and the like in pots.
If you decide to plant any produce or herbs (anything to eat) you really should get the soil tested for contaminants. I had a friend living in Bushwick who had her garden soil tested and they found lead and other poisons.
She said Columbia University does this for free. Not sure who else you can call?
we took our fence down and now our kids and neighbors kids play in a double-wide
We replaced our chain link with wood trellis so we still get the benefit of light and air circulation (and chats with our neighbor) but the aesthetics are much improved.
Chain link can be had with vinyl cladding which improves its appearance, and it won’t rust/deteriorate.
i agree, we have chain fence on one side and it opens up our yard. also enables conversations with neighbors while planting, etc. and privacy still seems to be respected.
