Brooklyn's Kid-Friendly Beer Gardens: Hot? Not?
Browsing through Loreley’s flickr, we spotted some obviously underage youngsters enjoying the sunshine (and presumably some non-alcoholic beverages) at the Williamsburg beer garden. Browsing through Loreley’s flickr, we spotted some obviously underage youngsters enjoying the sunshine (and presumably some non-alcoholic beverages) at the Williamsburg beer garden. Figures that Loreley was mentioned in this month’s Time Out New York Kids feature on NYC’s kid-friendly biergartens. Of the seven bars featured, five are located here in Brooklyn. Their kiddie-curfews are cited as follows Der Schwarze Kölner (“Tykes out by: 9pm”), Franklin Park (“Tykes out by: use your discretion”), Loreley Williamsburg (“use your discretion”), Mission Dolores (“Tykes out by: 8pm”), and Spuyten Duyvil (“use your discretion”). We can understand taking the kids to Der Schwarze Kölner for pretzels and brats in the afternoon, but Mission Dolores which doesn’t serve food seems like an odd choice. Does this mean that any bar with outdoor space is “friendly” to rugrats during daylight hours?

My question is if you allow kids in, then at what age do you tell them to stop coming? Like it’s fine for when they’re 0-8 years old, then they have to stay out for 13 years, til they’re old enough to come back?
That being said, I don’t mind them at open areas, like beer gardens, but in an actual bar, I would like it best if they were left at home.
Mission Delores does have pinball and board games, so there is stuff to do with kids there even if they aren’t drinking.
I have been to beer gardens in germany that are FULL of kids. I’m sorry, but c’mon. And no, they’re not different in germany. Kids are kids are kids.
Hell, they serve beer at playgrounds in Germany. I support this movement 110%. You start bringing the beer to the kids and I’ll stop bringing my kids to the beer.
Also, let me add that I think that the kids should be out of these places by no later than 8pm, and I would rather see them gone by 7.
is that a young mel brooks in the blue shirt?
What ishtar said, and add that parents remember where they’re at, don’t give me the stink-eye when i’m cursing and discussing ‘blue’ subjects with friends.
it looks like it’s during the day, and the adults all look lame anyway, so i dont see a problem with this per se. however if im in a bar and talking about prostitutes and illicit drug use or something equally as no kid friendly, and someone gives me the stink eye cuz they have a kid around, then i’d have a problem with it.
i used to bars all the time with my grandfather as a kid. shirley temples!

I think it’s good that these places exist (kids+alcohol friendly), but I never like being around kids when I’m drinking.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again…I believe children should not be at places that serve only alcohol. I don’t really consider the snacks served at beer gardens to be “food”…but parents will do what parents will do.
