This week, Time Out NY stokes the culture wars by digging into the Brooklyn vs. Manhattan wars. First, two editors debate the issue, followed by a series of multiple choice quizzes that test how “Brooklyn” or “Manhattan” you are and how easily you can recognize your fellow borough dwellers. Here’s one excerpt from the debate and you can find links to the quizzes below:

By choosing Brooklyn, we give ourselves the chance to dig into New York, to connect with what’s going on around us. We can hang out in any of myriad parks with friends—or have them over for dinner inside our actual apartments. We can know our neighbors, both in our buildings and on our blocks so that if we need to, we can make a big stink to clean up, protect or change something about our home. In Manhattan, businesses (and tenants) rotate in and out so fast that it’s unlikely you’d even notice when another one was planning to usurp a mom-and-pop store, or that you’d know enough people to fight it.

Let the stereotyping begin!

  1. Felt so lame for taking it last night with Mark. He had a pencil and a pad of paper too. We started out seriously enough, then, about 3 questions in I was like “heeeyyyy….wait a minute…this is stoooopid”.

I was aware of my genius in that moment.

  2. I had the same reaction, Montrose. Think I’d better pack up and move to Montclair. I clearly don’t belong in either borough — too old even to understand what half the quiz answers are talking about.

  3. Yes, I have been a resident here for quite some time, but I have seen these around the area for a couple of years now.
I always these were like keffiyehs worn by people who didn’t know how they were supposed to look (or more charitably, were subverting the identity politics of such apparel).

Shouldn’t it be a “marf” or “marves”, or is that too prescriptivist of me?

I think the blog stuff white people like covered this once, but I wasn’t familiar with the gender specific term.

  4. OMG, I took the quiz and I belong in Manhattan! AAAHHHHHH!!!!!
You know why? It’s because I grew up in “uncool” Brooklyn, back when Manhattan was the only place to be. I guess I still have that attitude.

    That’s it, right?
