Brooklyn residents in low-lying coastal areas such as Williamsburg, Red Hook, Dumbo, the Navy Yard and Coney Island were ordered to evacuate Sunday before the storm. Media focused on luxury and NYCHA housing — is there anything in between? — and found residents at both divided, with some staying and others fleeing. The transit halt at 7 pm last night shuttered many businesses. A quick look down restaurant row on Smith Street at 9 pm last night revealed restaurants closed but bars open. (Perhaps their proprietors walk to work? Or bars are considered a type of emergency service?) As of 9:30 this morning, we are already hearing reports from friends on Facebook that parts of Brooklyn Bridge Park are underwater and the Gowanus Canal has overflowed. What is happening in your area? Are you stocked with batteries and a bathtub full of water? Update: Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to close at 2 pm today.
