Free Ride to Columbia Street
Jake’s BBQ, a barbecue joint on the other side of the BQE, “is apparently offering free limo rides to and from the restaurant. Make a reservation and they’ll pick you up and cart you home, fat on fries and saucy ribs,” says Time Out New York‘s The Feed, along with a scan of the promotional postcard that Jake’s sent out. Any thoughts on this interesting ploy to get customers in the door?
Lots of Openings
Avi Shuker, the owner of Mimi’s Hummus in Ditmas Park, is getting ready to open a Middle Eastern market, called Market, on January 25. Fork in the Road reports: “Market shares a space with Shuker’s wine bar, which he says is set to open by the end of February. The bar will be called the Castello Plan, after the 17th-century map of Lower Manhattan designed by Jacques Cortelyou.” … Brooklyn Heights Blog says that Le Petite Marche, which shuttered on New Year’s Eve, will reopen as “Bread and Butter, and specialize in American comfort. Dishes will include southern fried chicken, lobster rolls and three different types of macaroni and cheese.” … Fork in the Road also reports that Balaka, a new “Punjabi-Bengali” restaurant from the owner of Bombay Dream, opened at 522 6th Avenue in Park Slope… Eater says that Khim’s Millenium Market is opening a restaurant and bar on Bedford and North 1st… and The Brooklyn Paper reports that Voxpop has reopened.
Closed for Good?
A tipster tells us that Reds Tapas Bar on Columbia Street closed over the holidays. Can anybody confirm this info? And if it’s true, anyone hear what’s next for the space?
After the jump: The new Brooklyn Flea food vendors (!!!), Café Glechik’s expansion, and buzz about Boerum Hill’s forthcoming “Montreal Jewish delicatessen”…
Brand New Flea Food
Grub Street spilled the beans on some of the new Brooklyn Flea food vendors. The Flea at One Hanson starts this weekend with some familiar eats Asia Dog, Rafael Soler’s pupusas, Red Hook Lobster Pound, and Choncho’s Tacos along with dips from Kors D’Oeuvres and a grilled cheese stand from French Culinary School grad Keith Klein is set to launch on January 16. Preview the very tempting Milk Truck Grilled Chese Menu here.
Expanding: Café Glechik
“After a little more than a decade in Brighton Beach, Café Glechik will bring Ukrainian dumplings and some of New York’s favorite soup to Sheepshead Bay at the end of the month. The second location will serve the same menu, but will feature two floors of seating to better accommodate large groups and a liquor license to keep them entertained,” says Grub Street.
Montreal-Style Jewish Deli Coming to Boerum Hill
Chowhounds are abuzz about Mile End, the deli set to open at 97A Hoyt Street (between Atlantic and Pacific) sometime this month. Their menu includes Montreal-style bagels, smoked meat, and, of course, poutine. If anybody sees any activity in this place, please let us know!
Does anyone know anything about the Mexican place that’s either opened or is about to open on Vanderbilt where Bob Law’s Seafood used to be?
Nice to see a little bit of French-Canadian culture seeping into New York City. Don’t be fooled though. There’s NOTHING like the real thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzg7GfKnsd8
Montreal style food in Brooklyn?
Maybe there IS a God after all!
I have posts with photos of meals from Jake’s. It’s good – not the greatest atmosphere to travel to though. I mostly order delivery, but with a limo ride…
IMO Jakes is terrific. It’s everything I had hoped the now-closed Billy Sunday’s/Whiskey Sunday’s/Flyfish, in my neighborhood, would have been, but wasn’t.
Thanks bod.

Has anybody here tried Jake’s? I’d love to find a good BBQ place.
They have disco fries at Bark which are very similar to Poutine. They said it’s one of their best sellers and it’s CRAAAAZZZY GOOD!
But I am looking forward to trying this place Mile End when it opens!
