Brooklyn Flea Week 4 on Sunday!

We can’t seem to buy any sunshine at The Flea, but there’s a ton of things you can buy from the 175-odd vendors who set up every weekend in the 40,000-square-foot school yard at the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene. Last weekend saw the arrival of a ton of new furniture dealers (see above); this weekend there’s a whole ‘nuther wave of vendors (including A&J 20th Century Design, formerly of Lafayette Street in Manhattan!). For more details check out
yesterday’s post on the Brooklyn Flea blog. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 176 Lafayette Avenue. Closet trains are the C and G to Washington/Clinton. Or you can take any of the number of trains that go to Atlantic Station and make the 10-minute stroll up Lafayette Avenue from there.
UPDATE: Despite the morning rain, about 80% of the vendors are set up and open for business today. Come check it out!
Jack, Atlantic Antic, Seventh Heaven, etc predated the internet where people can publicly kvetch. It was also a different time in the city and I think people looked forward to having fun events in their otherwise ho-hum neighborhoods. I did the street fair circuit throughout the city in the 80’s and it was definitely more of a neighborhood feel than these things are today. This market does have a good vibe but you wouldn’t know it reading some of the comments here.
And I must say….if there was a sock/glove/hat vendor, I wouldn’t bought something every weekend as I’ve come under dressed each time.
Can’t you read, idiot? No one here is talking about the “flea”.
You know, I’ve been critical of some gentrification myself, but I cannot for the life of me understand why ANYONE would be against a community based flea market where anyone who can pay for a table can sell their wares.
I grew up in Brooklyn, grew up in Brighton Beach and have seen tons of different flea markets. Granted I will say this one caters to a bit more “twee” tastes than most, but it’s a great start and I cannot fathom the complaints. Would people actually be happier if one of those “street fairs” filled with mozzarepas, sock vendors and the same old crap setup there? C’mon, get over it.
And for any of the true old schoolers here, did the Atlantic Antic gather this many whiny complaints back in the day when it started?
Some of you need to get a life. This is a blog for God’s sake, don’t log on and read it if it makes you so unhappy. And stay away from the flea market too.
Oh please, spare us the melodrama.
Yes, this blog is a venue for hate, greed and represents many forces that would like to destroy Brooklyn. However, it is one venue of hate among many, and quite mundane in its operations.
Believe me, hate can take many forms. This blog is only one of them, and not a particularly noteworthy specimen.
I am a far from rich, minority group member, living in Brownstone Bklyn, who has been reading this blog from almost the beginning, and I say 5:24, you are wrong.
I agree, lots of hatred and venom has been spewed here, but not from Brownstoner himself. He could spend his days, or pay someone, monitoring every thread and delete the crap, but where is the exchange of free speech and ideas then? I don’t need to have what I read sanitized. I’d rather the a**holes and bigots were up front, where I can see them, rather than deleted. This way, I know they are out there and what they think.
There have been times when I think he is a bit elitist, or ignorant of history and situations, and I’ve called him on it, as have others, and he is not unreasonable about admitting he doesn’t know everything. Who does? Everyone comes to the table with preset ideas. It’s the exchange of those ideas that can produce change. I’ve enjoyed the blog, learned a lot about real estate and my fellow Bklynites, good and bad. I’m glad the blog exists, and I’m glad he’s able to make a living from it and associated ventures.
Why are we always so suspicious and jealous when someone else runs with an idea and makes good? If you think he’s got sinister ulterior motives, then start your own market, blog, or business, and show him what’s what.

That’s not the issuer 2:33. It’s the pretense of good will that bothers me; I can deal with stated agendas.
To all the nattering nabobs out there: We realize that there are many coming to this blog with their own agendas with respect to real estate or social issues. It is a sign of how popular and well known this blog has become that many are trying to spin messages, mostly negative. We who find it valuable ignore the ‘noise’, skip the stupid posts and get the same useful information we always have. This website made me realize I could handle a renovation and made a big difference in my life. If Mr. B makes a few dollars with the Brownstoner franchise so what. I doubt you make hedge fund money running flea markets. More power to him.
Neighborhood-bashing, stroller-bashing, all the nastiness is what drove up traffic here and made this blog big. More traffic = more advertisers.
With the growing popularity of blogs to sell ads, the old “sex sells” adage of old media has become: Social Aggression Sells.
Everybody else knows it. It’s being written about all over the place. All you old fogies are just slow to catch on.
