From the NY Daily News comes Brooklyn tourism stats for the year 2010. 48.7 million visited New York City the past year, with 15 million coming to Brooklyn cultural attractions. (The 15 million includes both tourists and locals, and the Daily News thinks “part of the increase could come from cash-strapped Brooklynites taking in local attractions instead of traveling.”) Coney Island saw a 17 percent jump last summer with 14 million visitors. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden had 10,000 more visitors than the previous year, and 28 percent more people from outside the metro area stopped by the Brooklyn Museum. And don’t forget the more than 300,000 people who came to The Flea last year!

  1. Whenever I see one of those tour buses driving past me on Flatbush, I always wonder, what exactly is there to see around here? I love Brooklyn but there’s nothing to point at and say, “Gee! Look at this!” Except the bridge and they’re way past that by the time they get to Flatbush Ave. of course.

  2. Love Coney Island since I was a kid. And yes, randi- exactly. Horrible what Zamperla did and it was so unnecessary. There was plenty of room for new development without ripping out all of old Coney Island. Just another move in the disneyfication of NYC.

  3. i went the monday after that long weekend heatwave tho, before they cleaned the beach… which is why i was mortified by how dirty it was hahaha. the other times ive been there it was fine.

  4. Don’t worry rob, Coney will be Midtown-South in no time.

But yeah, the beach can be a little dicey sometimes in terms of decent sanitation. I prefer Coney in the winter, it’s just a serene place to be, (not to mention Totonno’s)

  5. @BoerumHillScott I would also like to see the stats

Re Coney Island, yes it was packed this summer. Some friends of mine took photos of a beach so crowded with people it reminded me of Weegee’s famous shot!

While the new Luna Park did indeed attract many visitors, the huge crowds were primarily due to the hot and dry summer. Perfect weather for Coney Island! I believe the high stats come from beach attendance by the Parks Dept and were conflated with the amusement park attendance stats in some news reports at the end of the season. As the Daily News reported in July: Beach attendance double this year as 11.7 million have gone to city’s shorelines this summer
