We know quite a few meat-lovers who take their burgers very seriously. We’ve even encountered a secret society that meets for regular burger-tastings and gives each burger a cow-rating — as in “The bun is perfect, the toppings are great, but I wanted it really rare, and it’s not quite as bloody as I like. Thus, I give it 2 cows.” They wouldn’t share their rating for the DuMont burger, pictured above, but we’ve heard great things about it. Could DuMont be a contender for the best burger in Brooklyn? Is the Luger burger better?

And just so all the vegetarians out there don’t feel left out, feel free to nominate the home of the best Brooklyn veggie burger, too. (We have yet to find a restaurant serving a veggie burger that holds a candle to the one we make at home.)

  1. Burgers? What &%$#$&$ century is this? Don’t you know that they increase a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer and that red meat production is a huge waste generator and thus a cause of environmental damage? Move on people. Beef is NO GOOD!!!!

  2. Of course Luger is great for steak, and their burgers are a great deal for lunch. But, I don’t think they’re the best.

DuMont makes a great burger, but over the years, with their increasing popularity, they’ve become rather stingy.

First, free drink refills at lunch disappeared. Then they suddenly refused to substitute salad for fries – even for a little extra money. Considering I used to go twice weekly for years, the changes made me feel not quite so welcome. I understand it’s a business, but I’d rather pay a little extra than loose service or options.

The last straw was a work lunch I organized where they played bait and switch with the menu and price. Both were different in negative ways upon arrival, and the service was awful (it took almost 3 hours).

So be warned that your DuMont burger might come with more hassle than it’s worth.

  3. I agree with Dave — the Cafe Lafayette burger (with goat cheese and carmelized onions — simple but perfectly complementing the burger itself) — was the best I’ve had in ages. But it was just the one time, so it may be that they’re not consistent.
