Yesterday Brooklyn Based ran this video of Scott Witter, a longtime advocate for the preservation of Admiral’s Row, taking a tour of the decrepit historical site back in the summer of 2009. With plans set to demolish all but one of the houses and the timber shed, it’s a bittersweet tour to be sure but worth watching. Of course, if the National Guard doesn’t get it’s act together, the roof of the timber shed could cave in this winter and threaten what limited preservation plans there are.

  1. This was quite interesting and frustrating at the same time. I had not idea there was still a walkway, a covered pergola in there that led to the parade ground. It was also very interesting to see the backs of the houses and buildings and realize the park-like space behind there. Fascinating.

Frustrating was the quality of the video, too much Scott, not enough Row. He’s great, and really dedicated to the cause. I remember speaking with him at a preservation event once. He certainly knows his stuff. But whoever took the video should have worked on capturing the architecture better, with clear shots, and then edited it so that Scott’s explanations were an ongoing narration, with shots of him speaking at important points. I was getting dizzy with watching him, then a fast but blurry pan of a building, with some close-ups, back to Scott talking.

But that’s nitpicking. I’m glad we have a record of what was there, because soon there won’t be anything, at the rate they are going. Demolition by neglect, via nature.

  2. And you’re and your as well…Are these things no longer taught in school? Or have people simply decided that they’re no longer important? Or, in this age of “refudiate,” have people decided that this is a positive evolution of the language?
