The Atlantic Avenue BID Steering Committee was formed back in 2008 in the hopes of organizing, improving and promoting a roughly ten-block stretch at the western end of Atlantic Avenue. After a couple of years of consensus-building, the effort has started to make some very concrete progress in the form of public support from Community Boards 2 and 6 recently; in fact, subcommittees from both community boards voted unanimously in favor of the plan in the past week. Once established, the BID would cover all properties fronting Atlantic Avenue from the BQE to 4th Avenue and one block north and south on all side streets within the district. (Properties from Court Street to Smith Street on the north side are excluded—they’re in the Court-Livingston-Schermehorn BID.) With an annual budget of $240,000 the BID will tackle marketing, sanitation, streetscape, and traffic and crime advocacy. Next up is a tentative date with the City Planning Commission on December 1st, with an eye to establishing the BID by July 2011. For more info check out their website.

  1. Blacks are a minority in the United States, maybe that might be the reason for the disproportionate demographics. Please make sense Sir. Stop ranting and help your community by just being a good person, I guarantee you will be respected and loved by many in your community. Only you can stop the hate from continuing. While many argue about race, I am teaching my ” White” kids to love all the same, while many argue about race, I am picking up the trash that the so called long time residents throw all over our block, While many argue about race, I am busy learning to be a better human being. Great news for Atlantic Ave. I hope it continues.

  2. When whites, by and large, want “their” hoods back (after the flight during the 50’s and 60’s), blacks and other people of color get pushed out. Sure, there’s people of color with higher incomes that stand behind and benefit from BID but that demographic is grossly disproportionate to the people of color that get squeezed out. Because of that imbalance it’s both classist and racist. Not that I don’t enjoy some of the benefits, I’m just not gonna go diabetic trying to sugar-coat it. Starts with the residential, ends with the commercial. It’s what it is. Bittersweet. Frustrating. Just sayin’.

Officially BID or not (i.e. Atlantic Ave), there’s an ulterior motive to outprice merchants of particular racial groups and classes (even whites in some cases but again, disproportionate).

JUST CALLING IT WHAT IT IS!

  3. BHO, how is the BID racial, or how does it squeeze out old time businesses? I don’t see what a BID has to do with that. Atlantic Ave has been changing fast over the last 10 years without a BID. We can talk about whether or not it’s a good thing or not, but the presence or absence of a BID was not the reason.

I agree religious institutions should kick in. They have as much a stake in the future or appearance of Atlantic as the merchants do.

  4. Sorry, but I do not see the racial issue here. I do see a district improving though, but I guess any issue can be turned into a racial one around here. I think that if someone owns a property he/she is free to do as they please with it. Renters are simply that, RENTERS. A written contract that has an expiration date. After that the renter is on his/her own. Enough with the pitty me attitude.

  5. Great news, especially for the eastern end – hopefully provide a cleaner street, if nothing else.

They should make the “religious institutions” pay, though. They have just as much or more foot traffic.

  6. Halsey Street could use some love. Great street, but as you get close to Lewis Ave area it is beat up. It needs repaving badly. Glad to see Atlantic getting taken care of. One street at a time I guess.

  7. A plus for everybody who can afford to stay. Bitter sweet. Longtime businesses that I have enjoyed are getting squeezed out and that is what BID is all about. Very sad.
