This is pretty awful news about a beloved Clinton Hill institution, just in from a press release from Council Member Tish James’ office:

The most recent robbery happened at Choice Market on Lafayette Avenue near Grand Avenue around 10:00 pm (closing time) on Tuesday, December 7. Three masked Black males entered the store, displayed two firearms and told the store manager to lay face down on the floor of the restaurant. One robber then removed money from the cash register. The gunmen degraded the employees both physically and verbally and ran with the day’s profits. The incident appears to have been well planned by the perpetrators.

Fortunately, Choice employees were not hurt during this incident, but my office will help to provide any assistance needed, be it psychological or otherwise. I have asked the 88th Precinct to increase patrols in and around Lafayette and Grand Avenues, and will be meeting with businesses to discuss other safety measures. We are also asking if anyone has information that may lead to the arrest of these suspects to please contact the 88th Police Precinct. Tips can be left anonymously at: (718) 636-6511, or 298 Classon Avenue, between Classon and Dekalb Avenues.

The Council Member is hosting a public safety meeting next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Cadman Congregational Church at 350 Clinton Avenue. All are encouraged to attend.

  1. There’s also such a thing as being proactive. Maybe if more cops walked a beat like they used to, had more of a regular, preventative presence, more of a connection to the community…

Most successful crime prevention tools don’t require the police and unfortunately the programs that help prevent crime are routinely the first things cut when there is a budget crises.

  3. If i ran a successful organization like Choice, I’d offer a hefty reward. I bet the low lifes they run with would give them up in 2 days. If they don’t get shot when the police come for them, they’re gonna learn what being degraded feels like real fast once their sweet asses wind up in the tombs.

  4. Firstly, I am a Criminology Major so, I do understand crime, cime prevention, and the job of the police..

Secondly, the 88th precinct is a joke.. Take a walk around the corner from Choice.. There you will see a dry cleaners.. The dry cleaners that reeks of weed.. The dry cleaner that is a numbers joint. The dry cleaner that has the drug dealers standing outside once the cleaners closes.. I think they close around 6? Seems like a reasonable time for a place to close that services working people?

Anyway, the 88th is garbage. I think there idea of cleaning up the neighborhood was shooting some guy on his door step.. When that didn’t work, they decided to try the ignore everything approach..

Can’t wait to see what is next.. Perhaps, bring some new people in to run the place.

  5. Ishtar- I think WhiteStone’s point is that if robbers are so bold as to hold up a place of business two blocks away from the precinct, they what kind of credibility and usefulness do the police officers have?

  6. “This is just another example of how much they suck..”

Really? You do know that the primary job of the police is to show up after a crime has taken place. The public is clearly misinformed in their thinking that police some how have some magical powers that can stop criminals in their tracks.
