This is pretty awful news about a beloved Clinton Hill institution, just in from a press release from Council Member Tish James’ office:

The most recent robbery happened at Choice Market on Lafayette Avenue near Grand Avenue around 10:00 pm (closing time) on Tuesday, December 7. Three masked Black males entered the store, displayed two firearms and told the store manager to lay face down on the floor of the restaurant. One robber then removed money from the cash register. The gunmen degraded the employees both physically and verbally and ran with the day’s profits. The incident appears to have been well planned by the perpetrators.

Fortunately, Choice employees were not hurt during this incident, but my office will help to provide any assistance needed, be it psychological or otherwise. I have asked the 88th Precinct to increase patrols in and around Lafayette and Grand Avenues, and will be meeting with businesses to discuss other safety measures. We are also asking if anyone has information that may lead to the arrest of these suspects to please contact the 88th Police Precinct. Tips can be left anonymously at: (718) 636-6511, or 298 Classon Avenue, between Classon and Dekalb Avenues.

The Council Member is hosting a public safety meeting next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Cadman Congregational Church at 350 Clinton Avenue. All are encouraged to attend.

  1. i agree with DIBs– the most effective strategy to catch these a-holes would be a cash reward.

BankBank this isn’t the type of crime where you can write off a neigborhood– these type of robbers target what they perceive as affluent marks.

if anything, a police precinct with a poor reputation is a good reason to avoid a neighborhood, but as ishtar points out, that wasn’t really the issue here. and this neighborhood has tish james, a big plus.

  2. shame to hear this. i like the neighborhood around pratt a lot and was considering moving there. i’m fine by myself, but i can’t have my gf live in a hood with this type of stuff going on.

  3. Terrible. Choice is really good. Also it’s always REALLY CROWDED so it’s hard to imagine this happening. Guess like they said fewer people there at closing time. All they have to do is lock the door, I guess.

Rf, maybe they were out for identity theft??

  4. m4l, they are not necessarily geniuses, these robbers. A while ago, when H&R Block was on Fulton St. between Bedford and Nostrand, they got held up. Know what the robbers got? TAX RETURNS!

  5. is that a real thing at the dry cleaners? people have been saying stuff like that since i lived in the neighborhood, but i never noticed anything particularly odd. They did dry clean a suit so their front business is a pretty good cover.

And since when does Pioneer stay open til 9? when i lived there it was always closing at like 6.

  6. “the 88th precinct is a joke.. Take a walk around the corner from Choice.. There you will see a dry cleaners.. The dry cleaners that reeks of weed.. The dry cleaner that is a numbers joint. The dry cleaner that has the drug dealers standing outside once the cleaners closes.. I think they close around 6? Seems like a reasonable time for a place to close that services working people?”

If the police are not going after blatant criminal activity there is a serious problem. I just take issue with general publics belief that crimes like these are generally preventable with police intervention. That’s far from being the case. There are just too many factors contributing to crime for us to have that expectation. The scenario you provided IS an opportunity for police to actually do something several crimes being comitted.
