Another One Bites the Dust on Flatbush
Since we have taken a particular interest in the rising rents on Flatbush, and in turn the large amounts of empty storefronts, this caught our eye. Park Heights Stationers and Copy Center had a sign on the gate that read, “After 25 years, Park Heights Stationers are closed due to the rising cost of operation.”…

Since we have taken a particular interest in the rising rents on Flatbush, and in turn the large amounts of empty storefronts, this caught our eye. Park Heights Stationers and Copy Center had a sign on the gate that read, “After 25 years, Park Heights Stationers are closed due to the rising cost of operation.” Last time we checked, there were ten empty storefronts on Flatbush between Dean and Prospect Place. Although this falls one block farther on Park, we wonder if this will sit empty as well.

Also, may I second the vote for anything BUT a mobile phone store, or sushi joint in this location. Although a Citibank would be great (for me), I also think that there are too many banks already along this part of Flatbush.
Overall, the businesses in the Sterling to Park stretch of this side of Flatbush are pretty useful, but I’m starting to get wary of all the vacant spaces. What’s going on? I have a hard time believing that there’s no market for these spaces in prime locations. Are the rents too high? Are there too many lease restrictions? Are the buildings in terrible shape?
And god forbid that something happens to Natural Land.
The owner of the liquor store a couple of doors down from the copy center/stationary store told me the owner of that store is the building’s landlord.
The sign says permanently closed.
That building is not well maintained. The liquor store had a roof leak for over a year. They put a kiddie pool the show window to catch the drips. There’s also an unconnected drain pipe on the rear of the building that spews every time it rains. That’s why a sheet of ice forms along 7th Ave. in the cold weather.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I’m really, REALLY sorry to see this place go. I tried to shop there as much as a could, but:
I think that this place would have done better to move with the times: a few letterpress cards or some upscale notebooks mixed in with the Bics and Meads would have gone a long way. I actually found their greeting card selection to be pretty awful.
Second, like the poster above said, the Duane Reade across the street must have cut into its business. There were countless times I noticed that I needed something on a Sunday, when Park Heights wasn’t open, or after 7pm, again, when Park Heights wasn’t open. I’m not saying it needed to be open 24/7, but maybe a few nights of the week it could have been open past 8pm.
FSRG:
They got blamed for Blockbuster and Royal Video closing too, even though almost no one goes and rents movies like that anymore.
This is a PRIME spot. Would love to see something useful go into that location.
Really? You are going to blame the LL for the shutting of a stationary and copy store…in 2010???
Umm hello, but people really dont write much on stationary anymore, not need to copy official docs often either (since 90% are digital).
And for any such stationary and copying needs that people have – there are tons of stores that carry it (drug stores, discount stores, and office supply stores).
Are you going to blame LLs for all the slide-rule and typewriter stores that are gone too?
God, please let them open a cell phone store at this location.
Only 25 years? It seems like they’ve been there forever. I loved shopping there. I am still missing the wonderful lady with the jet black beehive who was at the till for many, many years…
After twenty five years, the neighborhood has changed around the store. It’s no longer Park Where?
No doubt it’s the confluence of a rent increase and changing times. It’s a shame, stores like this added a certain amount of charm. But the landlords along Flatbush Avenue are pricing their tenants (eg. Royal Video, Christie’s, Idalia’s, Sugarcane) out of business or to other locations….
Let’s hope that the store that replaces the stationery store is not another bank…or Starbucks….
It takes you 10 minutes to walk to 7th and President from here?
It takes me 2.
