Riding up Adams Street this week, we realized not much had changed since we wrote about the pervasive illegal parking in the bike lane in front of the Marriott Hotel back in December. This time we were also struck by the number of cars parked one block closer to Tillary. Upon closer inspection, some of the offenders included cars with a handicapped permit, a court officer permit and a NYPD permit. Nice.

  1. I agree that the best and fairest way to reduce congestion in Manhattan, and Downtown Brooklyn as well, is to eliminate or seriously reduce the use of parking placards by government employees. Government employees make up a very disproportionate number of the people commuting into the city by car.

But bike lanes are just stupid and a waste of space. Bikes can use the same moving lanes as any other vehicle. I ride all the time, and the last place you’ll find me is in a bike lane, waiting to get doored, and having to swerve around all the double parked vehicles.

  2. Until Bloomberg revokes all these parking permits – and enforces parking laws –
no way do I support congestion pricing.
Because it is not congestion or pollution he is pushing – but ‘pricing’ meaning another revenue stream. Same goes for REs. parking permits – another wake to make money and make life tougher for regular people is this city.

  3. They should put the bike lane on the other side of the street, with a physical separator. Then these people could park (legally or not, whatever) near the buildings and bikes wouldn’t be bothered.

What’s more, that bike lane on the west side of the (side)street should be connected to Fulton Mall, which should have a dedicated bike lane in addition to the bus lanes.

  4. I hate it when cars park in the bike lane, but keying them is not only stupid, it’s also illegal. And if you think that’s actually going to stop someone from doing it, I think you’re wrong. You’re probably just creating another one of those assholes that has no tolerance for bikes, period.

But it is good for drivers like this to know that we are on to them and that people are watching them. For isntance, post pictures on to uncivilservents and flyer their cars with a screen shot 😉
