Riding up Adams Street this week, we realized not much had changed since we wrote about the pervasive illegal parking in the bike lane in front of the Marriott Hotel back in December. This time we were also struck by the number of cars parked one block closer to Tillary. Upon closer inspection, some of the offenders included cars with a handicapped permit, a court officer permit and a NYPD permit. Nice.

  1. An eye for an eye makes the commute inefficient. Of course bikers could do more to follow laws. But as this bike lane shows, the current system favors cars. And safety will always be the primary concern of someone pedalling amidst tons of moving metal. If the bikers had a viable alternative (realistic bike lanes), maybe this would not be an issue.

  2. Bicycle riders violate the laws mopre than anyone and I bet thier are a lot of bike people bitching about the cops here. 0820 is correct bikes have to obey all the traffic laws including stop signs and yeilding, they are the biggest crybabies. Give the cops a a break they do a dangerous job alot of u don’t have the balls to do for a lot less than they should be paid. Get over it, besides they are trying to get jobs in Long Island where they can get paid a decent salary and soon you will have 12.00 an hour cops and u will wish they came back

  3. Who is it that enforces public safety rules? The cops, stupid! If they are stopped from parking in the bike lanes, they could start to enforce other public saftey rules like ticketing bikers who constantly disobey public safety rules by not stopping at red lights and not signaling before turning. Bikers are supposed to follow the same traffic rules as cars, yet everytime I attempt to cross Jay street, I have to dodge bikes whose riders do not yield to pedestrians. Have you ever crossed in between parked cars instead of crossing in the pedestrian crosswalk? I am sure you have. Guilty of jaywalking! Stop hatin’ on the cops because they get to park wherever they want. As the CO’s tell the inmates who complain about dumb stuff, put “a ‘H’ on your chest and handle it.”

  4. 4:54, the PBA and other unions have delivered. They have already negotiated the fact that the city must provide parking for their members. It is the city that can’t deliver the spaces, so nothing is done when they park illegally. As long as the cops can park somewhere the union won’t complain that the city is in breach. If the union complains the city will have to take the few public spaces available and that will lead to complaints from the public. So, it is easier for the city to do nothing. As previous posters stated, before the building of the residential towers and hotels, there were municipal parking lots with designated spaces for these city staff members.

  6. I almost got hit by a car Thursday 3.28 biking on Adams right before Tillary. I was in the street, off the bike lane because it was full of cars (most nypd, not all).

The fact that the PBA can’t negotiate parking benefits for cops doesn’t mean that bikers should have their bike lanes taken away from them. it’s not a zero sum game – if parking is an issue for NYPD, they should tell their tell their union and negotiate the benefit. if the PBA can’t deliver, elect new leaders. i think cops deserve higher pay and benefits – not at the expense of bikers who are just trying to get to work to feed their families like everyone else.

that said, all these cars need to get out of the bike lane – someone is going to get hurt, and it will be 1) the fault of all of those who park on the bike lane and 2) the fault of the city for not enforcing rules related to public saftey.

  7. There are perks that come with a job, like the uniform allowance, and so-called “perks” that you steal, like using a permit in a way other than it was intended.

“[Y]ou want them to get parking tickets while they are protecting your pansy ass? Grow the fuck up!” No, I want them to get tickets when their spouses drive downtown, park, and then get on the subway and go to work (for example).

  8. FYI: Most ADAs in Brooklyn do NOT get parking placards and have to schlep to work on the subway like everyone else. They also don’t have a union and get paid peanuts.
