70-Berry-Street-1109.jpg
70 Berry Street, aka the Allan Building, just hit the market last week. The 38-unit new construction project looks pretty nice to us, crisply modern but also clearly paying tribute to the area’s architectural heritage. The developers must be praying that this project fares as well on the open market as the neighboring 72 Berry did. It looks like the interiors are decent and the prices (at $600 to $700 a fott) are similar so maybe it will. We heard an early report that there are “quite a few” accepted offers already.

  1. I looked on Google Maps to see what was on that block and it looked like siding to me. I guess it could be vinyl siding… 😉

Installing sheets of chalky-orange bricks in panels is not the same as the work of a bricklayer from 100 years ago. This brick has as much in common with Victorian-era brick townhouses as White Castle hamburgers do to a steak from Peter Luger.

Anyway, Williamsburg has never been pretty, so I guess in that context it fits.

  2. Yawn, same old crappy layouts. Here we go again, Living Room, Kitchen combo, small Bedroom.
hardly any closets. The windows look imposibble to clean from the outside, plus no screens either.

    No bath room window……

  3. that area has few if any aluminum siding houses – great comment scatalogics! it does have a lot of brick buildings – both larger converted commercial buildings and several blocks of victorian era brick townhouses. i think brick is a good choice from a contextual point of view. and, i love brick anyway.

  4. “Paying tribute to what architectural heritage? Aluminum siding and boxy brick warehouses? I can’t see too much from the little pictures but that building looks hideous.”

You’re right – they should have just built a giant brownstone.

  5. It actually looks decent in person, more so than its neighbor across the street (69 Berry, same developer, which is apparently sold out). This is quickly becoming a very nice corner.

  6. well the ugly and crappily made and horribly located ones wont dipster. this one seems decent. it just seems people with this much money to spend who then choose to live in williamsburg come across as a bunch of phoney wannabes.
