A buyer is planning on purchasing a property in East New York and is hoping to get some advice on converting the one-family to include an apartment in the basement. So far an architect and several contractors have given different opinions on the work involved in digging out the basement to accommodate the required ceiling height. What should they know about underpinning, getting a certificate of occupancy and necessary means of egress before leaping into this project?

Please chime in with your advice.
