building
Does anyone know the history of this two-story building on 15th Street and Fifth Avenue that now is full of downward-doggers (how is the Yoga Institute anyhow?). It feels like a very serious, grown-up building that should have had some kind of civic purpose when it was first built. At the very least, we’re willing to bet it didn’t start out as a home for nail salons and gift stores. GMAP

  2. Why bother being catty about the Korean greengrocers? They are 2 separate entities, and have a turnover in ownership every few years. I’m personally glad they are there – would you rather walk to C-Town for pretty and more expensive vegetables?

  3. Hi. I do believe I know a bit about this bldg. I met a man who lived in a house I owned in the S. Slope in the 30’s and the 40’s. He told me that the house was built for a man that owned a bar in what I believe to be that building. But I’m not sure as he only was able to say that the bldg looked like a bank and it was on that corner. Our house had a built in safe. And he said that he was told by his parents that the safe was there because the bar was running during a period when bank’s weren’t trusted. Not sure if prohibition ought to factor in to this story or not.

  4. I think Youngs — the fruit and veggie place that would be to the left in the pic, if the pic went that far — is better than the one at the corner. I don’t think either is terrible though.

  5. Sorry — you CAN’T see the cheap, crappy fruit and veg place in this pic. That red awning might be the more decent one of the two… I can’t tell. Nevertheless, my question still stands: are they in cahoots?

  6. In that pic you can see a fruit and vegetable place. It’s bottom-of-the-barrel — the produce is inevitably a day or two away from rotting. Just to the left of the image is another fruit and vegetable place with slightly better food. I’m convinced they’re owned by the same people, and the place in the middle of the block passes their old fruit for sale in the place at the end of the block.

    My wife disagrees.

Anyone have any opinions to offer?
