Address: 379 Washington Avenue, between Greene and Lafayette Avenues
Name: The Mohawk Apartments, originally the Mohawk Hotel
Neighborhood: Clinton Hill (Clinton Hill Historic District)
Year Built: 1904
Architectural Style: Beaux Arts
Architects: Neville and Bagge
Why chosen: When built, this was the Mohawk Hotel, an upscale residential hotel, with the latest in luxury and modern conveniences for its patrons. Originally, the hotel had a large dining room on site, with maid and porter services, room service, etc. It was the finest hotel in Clinton Hill. The photo can’t show all, but this is a huge building, with two large flanking wings around a large center entrance. When I first came to Clinton Hill to visit Pratt in the late 1970’s, the Mohawk was sealed up and this was a dangerous corner. When I finally moved to Brooklyn in the 80’s, the building was being renovated into apartments. This is one of Clinton Hill’s best buildings, designed by architects who built some of Manhattan’s Upper West Side grand apartment buildings.
