We spotted the Union Rat outside of the CityPoint construction site, where we recently took a tour. The two men accompanying it didn’t have much to say except the obvious: that the construction company isn’t hiring union workers (or, as a commenter points out below, some particular union isn’t getting its cut of the action). Regardless, work on the site was progressing same as usual.

  1. Rat means they aren’t using Local 79 Laborers. Not that they totally non union.
    Open shop.
They’ll likely have union diggers, blasters, steel and electrical and plumbing, in part.

  2. DIBS — Why no sympathy? I generally am skeptical of construction quality on major projects that are not union — although I admit I am thinking of large residential construction and less of commercial.

I can’t recall if City Point itself was supposed to have a large residential component or if that was some other project on the new Willoughby Park that was proposed.
