The budding scientists of Brooklyn have a great option to learn something new and have some fun with after-school programs, parties and camps with one of the best science educators in the borough, Carmelo the Science Fellow.

Carmelo Piazza, the Science Fellow, has been combining learning and laughter for young Brooklynites for nearly two decades. He taught at P.S. 261 for 16 years, and realized that a science education with some time-tested humor mixed in can motivate students to learn other subjects. According to Carmelo, he hosts up to 10,000 kids a year at his events.

Carmelo’s President’s Day camp is upcoming, and is a science adventure in the kitchen. Running from Monday to Friday the week of February 21, Carmelo will show campers the properties of chewing gum and work with them to make their very own dark chocolate using chemistry.

There’s also a spring break camp — and this time he’ll explore the nature of animals from all across the globe. Campers will be able to figure out how polar bears splash in freezing water without getting cold, and work with lots of cool creatures like green crabs and millipedes. The camp takes place Monday to Friday the week of April 10th.

Carmelo’s summer camps cover a wide variety of science-related topics, including geology, ecology, astronomy, and even the science behind superheroes. There are eight one-week summer camps, each on a different subject, and they run from July 10 to September 1.

Carmelo’s camps will give kids the ability to dive deeper into optics, the science behind light, engineering, and even the physics behind roller coasters, all with fun and engaging workshops.

Carmelo is also the man behind the Brooklyn Preschool of Science, now operating in two locations. There’s plenty for the youngsters to see, touch and explore, including a 300-gallon fish tank and lots of creatures. Carmelo is accepting registrations for the fall now on a first-come first-serve basis.

There’s also a preschool summer camp available for the youngest of new scientists. Carmelo also offers birthday parties and other events. The camps will take place at The Laboratory of Fun at 300 Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill.
