Closing Bell: Awesome New Library Coming to the Far Rockaways

The architecture studio Snøhetta just released renderings for a brand new library for the Far Rockaways. The two-story building replaces a smaller, existing library at Mott and Central avenues that also served as a relief center during Hurricane Sandy. Here’s what Dezeen has to say about the shimmery design: “The exterior will be screened behind fritted glass, creating a golden surface intended to reference the color of the skies along the Long Island coastline. A sliced-off corner will be clad with transparent glass, providing the building’s entrance.” The new building will seek LEED Silver Certification and will be built at an elevation exceeding the new FEMA flood zone guidelines. The architects also plan to collaborate with an artist to create site-specific artwork within the library. Currently the project is in the design development stages with the city. The architects explain the intent behind the interior design: “The entry is announced with a tall transparent glass pyramidal opening at the corner. The interior is organised around an inverted pyramidal atrium, which allows the penetration of natural light to the ground floor as well as a view of the sky from within the building. Combined, they provide the entry and circulation sequence through the building, and orient the visitor within.”
