The Truman Capote House on Willow Street in Brooklyn Heights Gets an Update

It looks like the restoration of 70 Willow Street is complete, now that the front door is back in place.

Brownstoner noticed the historic door at the 1839 residence, known as the Truman Capote house, has been getting a spruce-up over the summer. The ornate details of the door were temporarily more visible when it was given a coat of light grey primer.

While work on the facade was approved by Landmarks in 2015, an additional approval was issued in 2017 specifically for rehabilitation of the paired wooden front entry doors. The permit approved their temporary removal and disassembly and replacement of any deteriorated material in kind. It also specified new laminated wood panels could replace the existing modern paneling on the interior-facing side of the doors.

The doors are historic, although it’s possible they are slightly later than the house. The house’s longstanding coat of yellow paint was removed to expose the original brick by 2016.

As far as the inside of the house, we hear Miles Redd, a member of the AD100 and Elle Decor’s A List, was tapped for the interior design and decoration, completed over a year ago. The house was purchased in 2012 by Grand Theft auto creator Dan Houser and his wife Krystyna for a then record breaking $12,500,000.
