Mexican restaurant in Bed Stuy 361-halsey-street-042915

Big news for Bed Stuy: A full-service Mexican restaurant with a bar, a first, is getting ready to open in Stuy Heights. Tepache Mexican Grill will be located at 361 Halsey Street on the corner of Marcus Garvey, one block from Saraghina.

No one was around when we stopped by this morning for photos, but a tipster who lives nearby filled us in on the details. Owner Armando Solterra hopes to open in about a month. There will be outdoor seating, and the restaurant is in the process of applying for a liquor license.

Our tipster also sent us the photo below of the dining room under construction. We see exposed brick, a tin ceiling, an open kitchen with a grill, and contemporary pendent lights.

The enormous neighborhood has a few taquerias, including one reportedly coming in one block away at Lewis and Halsey. Chilo’s bar, which has a taco truck in the backyard, recently opened on Franklin.

But as far as we know, Bed Stuy does not have any full-service Mexican restaurants with drinks. GMAP

  1. I got the chance to speak with the owner this weekend – he helped me put a spare tire on my car (I live around the corner). When I asked how he planned to deal with the church issue he just kind of shrugged and didn’t have an answer… I think this dude sunk a lot of money into the site before finding out about the rule. Here’s hoping he can make rent on food alone!

  2. Nice! I can’t imagine how they’re possibly going to get a liquor license though. They’re well inside the 200 foot rule from a church.

  3. It’s not a storefront, it’s a 16,000 square foot church that takes up the whole Northeast corner of Marcus Garvey and Halsey. It’s actively used as a church, well attended every Sunday, and I can’t imagine what loophole these guys are planning on using to get around it. Maybe they didn’t do their homework?
