Rooftop Garden Going in at Whole Foods

A tipster sent in these photos of the garden being constructed on the roof of Whole Foods in Gowanus at the corner of 3rd Street and 3rd Avenue. Gotham Greens will operate the garden. That’s the historic Coignet building in the left corner of the photo after the jump. The store will open before the end of the year, according to the company.

  • Well I predicted it would never happen so I was wrong – it took 10years but it looks like the Gowanus Whole Foods really will open.

  • They seem to be moving very quickly now. Much of the brick facing in up, parking lot looks done, and I saw refrigeration equipment delivered weeks ago. I can definitely see them opening between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I can’t wait to see them open, it will be good for the whole area, including Gowanus, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, 4th Ave. and Park Slope.

In fact, there is already significant traffic at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 3rd Street, especially during the weekday AM peak. Norhtbound traffic on 3rd Avenue frequently gridlocks 3rd Street, which prevents westbound traffic from crossing 3rd Street to the 3rd Street Bridge. Some of the current problem is exacerbated by the WH construction, but it existed prior.

To say there is “no chance” of gridlock is ignoring the current situation. If I had the time, I would look up the number of trips WH is expected to generate, but it is not insignificant and will make matters worse as the vast majoirty will be automobile trips.
