Great news from 596 Acres: the Department of Environmental Protection handed over the keys to the Environmental Protection Water Tunnel 3 shaft site on the northeast corner of Myrtle and Kent Avenues. The Pratt Area Community Council is now in charge of its future as a green space. The massive lot, which spans almost the full block of Kent Avenue between Willoughby and Myrtle, is separated into three parcels. The parcel fronting Myrtle is now accessible for community use. The other two parcels may become available down the line but are currently being used by the DEP. Local pol Lincoln Restler (and longtime advocate of this green space) tells us that there have been “a lot of bureaucratic hurdles, but this is a much-needed addition to that neighborhood.” The community is considering transforming this space into a dog run, composting site, a passive green space, a garden, or a play space. The steering committee will be meeting this Sunday, July 29th at 12pm at the site to discuss what’s next. All are welcome to attend!
