As we mentioned back in March, the owners of the 5 Burro Cafe in Forest Hills have taken over the old Pit Stop space on Columbia Street. Their grand opening was last night, and we’re interested in hearing how their Mexican fare compares to Alma‘s similar options down the street. You can view the 5 Burro menu online and catch a glimpse of their big, bright backyard after the jump. GMAP

  1. Totally disagree with comment #1. We know Mexican food quite well andI thought the food was quite good. Delicious pork tacos, generous portions and attentive service (and they JUST opened). But the garden is quite spacious and lively. I have high hopes for this place and plan on going back!

  2. Backyard garden: A
    Food: (2x eating) a solid B depending
Price/Value: C+ (You can get stuffed at Calexico and savor every bite for much less). Lower priced specials will keep a local base coming back when business slows.
Ambience: C those overly bright beer signs at the bar and the white light in the hall make you want to run out! -so don’t be looking to get cozy in the front space. Sugar Lounge down the street has that covered!
Advice: make your money now and market to $ on the other side of the BQE. This will save you when the season dries up this fall and Columbia Street becomes totally and I mean totally dead until the spring.
Good luck 5B. Know you market, evolve and you will be a winner

  3. Had dinner last night at 5 Burros. My husband and I have always loved the one in Forest Hills and I was excited to hear one was opening in Brooklyn. The place is so cute and although it was chilly for me to eat in the garden, we scoped it out and it’s huge! The food was just what we expected, delilcious and made with quality ingredients. Most times I get something involving steak (mixed fajitas, ensalada mexicana) because it’s always tender and flavorful. The husband tried the tacos “al pastor” for the first time. Really good and not stingy with the pork. The service was great. The first post on here sounds bitter about their whole Forest Hills experience! The people of FH should be offended! Despite the chain restaurants and stores, FH still has family run boutiques and stores that have been there for years. Alma’s nice but I might not feel the same if it wasn’t for that rooftop. Take advantage now people, because if it’s anything like Forest Hills, it will soon be packed. It’s a good place to just kick back and laugh and have fun. Oh yeah, don’t forget the really good frozen drinks.

  4. I am the owner of the 5 Burro Cafe. For those of you who don’t know us, we have been in business as the 5 Burro Cafe in Forest Hills for 20 years. I read everything that is written about us on the web and only until recently have I ever commented back. I take what I read as constructive criticism and use it to improve on what we feel (as do many others)is a great product. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Having said that I would like to direct this comment to Bedstuytownhouse. I take personal affront to myself and my patrons being called trashy. I invite you to look at our website and view our community page. The charities listed are only a few of the ways we are involved in our community. It is our patrons that help to make that possible. As for your reference to the dining in Forest Hills I have to say we have many excellent restaurants. The former chef of Ciprianis owns a lovely restaurant on Metropolitan Avenue, Il Poeta. Danny Browns, Tuscan Hills, Pasta del Giorno, My Kitchen, Narita, Cabana, Mardi Gras, Santa Fe and of course The Family (serving FH for generations). Only to mention a few. Bedstuy, your words were harsh and there was nothing constructive about your criticism. Remember someone’s livelihood is at the tip of your pen or the tap of your keyboard. I invite the Brooklyn community to share the 5 Burro experience and judge for yourself. With all due respect I remain proudly and sincerely, Marla Cornejo, Owner of the 5 Burro Cafe.

  5. Man, I don’t care what you say about their rooftop view – Alma s-u-c-k-s.

Awesome looking backyard in this new place – I’ll definately give it a try!!

  6. Well, I have a feeling that there’s *someone* who won’t be trying this place… man o’ man.

The backyard looks really nice. Well, it was a really nice backyard a few months ago when it was the Pit Stop too… I like bright colors though.

  7. Having lived in Forest Hills for 5 years at one point in my life, I can tell you that their food is nothing short of disgusting. I have no idea why it is so popular in FH but when you have to take into consideration the kind of restaurants that do well over there – Uno’s, TGI Friday’s. It’s a trashy group of people and they are now spreading it to Brooklyn.
