It’s official: New York City will take control of Governors Island, the former military campus in New York Harbor. Under the agreement reached with the state, much of the 172-acre site would become a public park; the city also plans to build a high school on the island and there’s a possibility that New York University could build a satellite campus as well. The deal comes less than a month after the city formally took control of Brooklyn Bridge Park from the cash-strapped state; the two had co-managed the island since the Feds handed it over in 2003. What tips the balance here is the state’s fiscal crisis, said Raymond Horton, a Columbia Business School professor. The state is in a dire situation. The city is much better managed at this moment. That makes possible something that was not when the two governments’ finances were in similar condition. Operating the island is expected to cost about $60 million over the next five years.

  1. Will the h.s. and college impact significantly in the summer…on weekends?

Anyway, the frat boy water taxi beach was tucked off to the right, in a low lying area, e.g., the noise seem pretty contained…once you get over the berm and along the buildings and courtyards, couldn’t hear the rowdiness. Not sure if its returning…

  2. yeah i dont think a high school should go there. there’s a gazillion high schools all over the city that are closing, why the hell destroy this island by putting in a high school? and you know it will be one of those lame high schools with the ridiculous names that do not mean anything.. like Technical Astronauts of Venus High School or Future Engineers in the Ballet of Performing Wizards type of thing.. knowing full well not a single astronaut or engineer (or wizard for that matter) will EVER graduate from there.

  3. a high school and college? Say goodbye to the serenity that was easily the best feature of the island. My advice would be to get in there this summer and enjoy it while you can, especially the hammocks.

Last year they set up one of those frat boy water taxi beaches if that’s your thing.

ugh those water taxi beaches are SO lame. the original one on long island city was kinda cool tho.

  5. Umm… since I work there… this little nugget in the NYT article almost escaped me: “Other prospective deals being discussed in the Bloomberg administration include exercising the city’s right to buy Battery Park City from the state and negotiating a takeover of the state-run City University of New York system, according to city officials.”

So… CUNY was “sold” the the state during the 1970s fiscal crisis and now the city wants to “buy” it back?

I’m a little ambivalent about this.

  6. Boerum and DeLepp… i guess that was my point. Will the $12 million continue to cover the free water taxi?

It’s also the only “seasonal” park that I know of. A bit odd, no? I guess you can charter a boat yourself during the off season… or can you? Are they allowed to dock there?
