The Upstater: Historic Stone Houses in Saugerties

Fridays at 11, the Upstater website brings you a selection of properties within three hours north, and a little bit east or west, of New York City.

This week: the Stone Houses of Saugerties.

    6 La Rue Lane, Saugerties

Saugerties in Ulster County isn’t as big as Kingston or as legendary as Woodstock, but it’s getting more popular by the day as a weekend getaway destination or a place to live full-time. It’s easy to see why. Located a little over two hours from Brooklyn, the village of Saugerties is walkable and adorable, jam-packed with excellent shopping and dining, and has one of the best public libraries in the county. It’s also an area rich in history, with stone houses that date back as far as the 17th century. And we are suckers for them. Here are a few we particularly like. Take note that they are a bit pricier than the usual housing fare in and around Saugerties, but let’s face it: History ain’t cheap.

There’s a lot to love about 6 La Rue Lane ($450,000), especially the idyllic eight acres upon which it sits. This house dates back to the 18th century, and while we fancy its stonework and outbuildings, there’s much we would change, including the kitchen, which makes the $450,000 price tag a little steep. Note: The alternative address for this property is 1768 Route 32. Taxes are $9,825.

    1655 Old Kings Highway, Saugerties

This one ($445,000) isn’t as pretty as some of the other stone houses in Saugerties, but it’s certainly sitting pretty on 30 acres of lovely land. Love the study, although we would repaint. Not so loving the pea-green carpeting in the living room. We would reconsider the kitchen, too. But oh, 30 acres. So tempting. Taxes: $12,205.

    48 Oak Road, Saugerties

Of course our favorite one is the most expensive of the bunch  at $974,000. It’s just the right mix of old and new, over 4,000 square feet, and it’s got a pool and horse barn on eight and a half acres. Fine country living at its best. Taxes: $13,986.
