The village of Ellenville, located in the Ulster County town of Wawarsing, is one of our favorite places to eyeball fairly inexpensive houses. Some may consider Ellenville to be too far into the boonies for their taste, since the village is along the Shawangunk Ridge and over 40 minutes from the city of Kingston, but we think its natural environment makes it all the more attractive. Besides, the village itself has some good things to recommend it: Ellenville is home to the Shadowland Theatre, as well as one of our favorite restaurants in upstate New York, Aroma Thyme Bistro. Ellenville is also one of those places where it’s easy to find some good-looking options for around $200,000 or less. Here’s a few we picked from the Brownstoner listings.

We certainly like the outside of this pristine 1920s Arts and Crafts bungalow, and while the inside looks like it could use some updating in spots (bye bye, pink carpeting!), we love the built-in shelves and stone fireplace. Includes a back deck and above-ground pool. Beds: 3. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 1,265. Lot Size: .22 acre. Taxes: $3,530.

We chose to stick to photos of the outside of this property, mainly because the interior shots don’t really show much that we could sink our teeth into. But the main house (above) is situated on 37-plus acres, and the property includes two working cottages (one of them is a chapel and the other a guest house), a two-car garage, and a barn. Room, room, and tons more room. Beds (main house): 5. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 2,893. Lot Size: 37.24 acres. Taxes: $3,698.

Located right on the Beerkill Creek, this 1,500-plus-square-foot farmhouse sits on 11 total acres, so get ready to embrace privacy. Love the stone patio in the back and the red barn and shed peeking through the trees near the creek. Includes hardwood floors, wood stove, chestnut wood work, and sun room. Beds: 3. Baths: 1.5. Square Feet: 1,530. Lot Size: 11 acres. Taxes: $2,906.

Cool, unique, and built in the ’60s, this Ellenville ranch’s focal point is the hexagonal living room area that wraps around the cylindrical fireplace in the middle of the room. It’s also bright and cheery with high vaulted ceilings. Location is nice, right in the village (which probably explains the higher taxes). We can dig it. Beds: 3. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 2,108. Lot Size: .61 acre. Taxes: $6,724.
