The Upstater: Along the Shawangunk Ridge

The Shawangunk Ridge is a hard, stony spine that reaches across Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties. It’s particularly dramatic in Ulster County, where the Minnewaska Preserve shows off the Ridge’s craggy, most rough-hewn side. Species accustomed to both northern and southern environments manage to coexist on the Ridge, making it a unique spot to explore the biodiversity of the Hudson Valley and Catskills. We suggest checking out the Ice Caves at Sam’s Point in Ellenville, or hiking around Lake Minnewaska at Minnewaska State Park (make sure you check their website before you go to see which trails are closed) near Kerhonkson. For this week, we’re looking at properties around the Ridge, some closer to civilization than others.
