In the mood for an upstate adventure that captures the traditions of the season? It isn’t too late to squeeze in a trip to one of the historic sites that are bedecked for the holidays.

Worth visiting year round, many of the historic house museums of upstate New York (and Yonkers) are especially resplendent this time of year. Interiors dotted with bows, lights and evergreen and awash with the essence of Christmas past –– both historic and fanciful –– may provide some inspiration for your own interior.

10. Locust Grove, Poughkeepsie
An Italianate villa by Alexander Jackson Davis, this 1850s home was built for Samuel Morse, artist and inventor of the telegraph and Morse Code.

9. Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hyde Park
The Roosevelt estate, known as Springwood, was the childhood home and adult retreat of FDR.

8. Boscobel, Garrison
Built between 1804-1808, Boscobel is one of the country’s premier examples of Federal architecture.

7. Lyndhurst, Tarrytown
Constructed in 1838, Lyndhurst is a dramatic Gothic Revival estate designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, a giant of early 19th century American architecture.

6. Staatsburgh State Historic Site, Staatsburgh

Also known as the Mills Mansion, the original Greek Revival home was transformed in the 1890s by architect Stanford White into a Beaux Arts mansion.

5. Clermont State Historic Site, Germantown
The original early 18th century home of the prominent Livingston family was burned by the British during the Revolutionary War. The house was rebuilt in the 1780s and stayed within the family until the 1960s.

4. Vanderbilt Mansion, Hyde Park
A Gilded Age country palace, the Beaux Arts-style mansion was designed by McKim, Mead & White for Frederick W. and Louise Vanderbilt in the 1890s.

3. Wilderstein, Rhinebeck
A Queen Anne country house from the 1880s, Wilderstein stayed within the Suckley family for over 100 years, surviving largely unchanged.

2. Glenview, Yonkers
A riverside home built in 1877 for the Wall Street banker John Bond Trevor and his family, the house is now part of The Hudson River Museum of Yonkers.

1. Captain David Crawford House, Newburgh
The grand Federal-style mansion, constructed in 1830, is the headquarters of the local historical society and the starting point for an annual candlelight tour of the impressive architectural beauties in town.
