Brownstoner Upstate: Get Your Rent on in Columbia County

How do you know when it’s nearly summer? Well, there’s that whole Memorial Day holiday weekend, of course, but if you’re a real estate enthusiast in the Hudson Valley or Catskills, you know the summer cometh when the rentals market is robust. Today, we’re looking at one of our favorite rental markets, Columbia County, for a couple of summer possibilities as well as some more permanent offerings. Have a great holiday, everyone!

Like most of the rental properties this week, this rustic barn in Ghent is private. It’s situated on four acres off of a rural road about 20 minutes northeast of Hudson, so feel free to hole up and commune with nature for a while. Need to cool your heels for a month in the upper Hudson Valley? Here’s a vintage eyebrow Colonial in Copake, just a few miles from the New York-Massachusetts state line. Although Copake Lake is normally the desirable locale for summer rentals in this part of Columbia County, you get more bang for your buck if you’re not lakeside. Plus, this one comes with land. Ten acres’ worth. And, it abuts a nature preserve. Available for the month of July only, but what a nice month it would be. Beds: 2. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 1,280. Lot Size: 10 acres. And for the creative types looking for their muse in the country, here’s a loft and studio house in a roomy 1,800 square foot space. Ancram is a sleepy town near the border of Columbia County and Dutchess County, 25 minutes southeast of Hudson. This is the second floor of a two-story antique Colonial right in the middle of the hamlet, and here’s the reality check: You’re going to need a car. Funky artsy space, small town, rural surroundings, but it’s not completely bereft of culture. The loft is walking distance to the Ancram Opera House. Beds: 1. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 1,792. See that refreshing pool at the top of the post? That pool also comes with a c.1863 Colonial farmhouse in beautiful, bucolic Stuyvesant, Columbia County. The rent pays for one summer month in the 1300 square foot, 2 bed/2 bath house, complete with garden and the 55 ft. in-ground pool on 3 acres. The town of Stuyvesant is pretty, but it’s rural. If you’re looking for exciting nights out on the town, this isn’t the place for you. But we probably didn’t have to tell you that. Beds: 2. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 1,300. Lot Size: 2.9 acres.
