Upstate: Eye Candy on the Hudson

Last week, we took you on a virtual tour of fixer-uppers in and around the Greene County town of Catskill, which includes the village of Catskill, one of our favorite river towns. This week, however, we’re swinging the pendulum in the other direction by looking at some truly stunning properties, also located in river towns. Most come with breathtaking views of the Hudson, while others are in areas within striking distance of the river, like West Saugerties in Ulster County. So, let’s all put on our wishing caps and take stroll down “Oooh! Aaah!” Lane in upstate New York.

A taste of Antebellum on the Hudson River. Can you spot the river? There it is, just over the treeline. Okay, the view of the mountain is better, but this house IS the view for anyone looking at it. Built in 1830, this Greek Revival is immaculate, clearly well-preserved, and looks like it could be the setting for upstate New York’s own version of Falcon Crest. Another stunner with a view of the Hudson River. This Victorian is located in chi-chi Cold Spring in Putnam County, which, through the years, has become quite the touristy little town. Regardless of how you feel about that aspect, it’s got some lovely scenery, and this place fits right in with the character of it all. According to the listing, it has lots of updates, including restoration of the plank floors, new electric, chimney relining, and a new kitchen. Walking distance to town. Beds: 4. Baths: 2. We’re suckers for brick, especially when the brick house in question appears to be brooding over the horizon with a chip on its shoulder. We love the big wrap-around porch, the gingerbread trim, and its location perched on a hill, complete with a river view. It’s also just outside of the village of Beacon in Dutchess County, not too far from the Metro North station, the Dia, and the waterfront park. Beacon’s becoming almost as touristy as Cold Spring, but the stores in Beacon are much cooler. Just our humble opinion on things. Beds: 3. Baths: 3. Square Feet: 1,820. Lot Size: .31 acre. Est. Fishcreek Road is not really anywhere near the Hudson River, so no views, but it’s located in West Saugerties, and Saugerties is technically a river town. Anyway, who cares about views when you’re living in a refurbished old church that includes a huge art studio? The location is good (sometimes, church locations don’t translate well into residential locations) and the landscaping is lovely with some stone retaining walls and greenery to fill out its 3+ acres. We’ve been in love with this place for years, back when we first set foot inside of it during the Saugerties Artists Studio Tour. It’s just right. Beds: 2. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 3,808.
