After all, isn’t this why we’re up here in the Hudson Valley and Catskills? To get closer to nature?
See that big red barn above the jump? That barn comes with a 3 bedroom farmhouse in the Ulster County town of Gardnier, and while the property stands right within the hamlet of Gardiner behind the public library, it’s over 6 acres of land and abutted by a park. The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is practically right outside the front door. In other words, walking distance to the market, but feels like the country. Beds: 3. Baths: 1.5. Square Feet: 1,812. Lot Size: 6.16. Distance from Brooklyn: 1 hour, 44 mins, Google time.

And for the same monthly rental price as the Gardiner farmhouse above, another farmhouse. This one is located in the Columbia County town of Claverack, east of the Hudson River and north of Greene County. Lot size is a whopping 14 acres, but according to the listing, you’ll be sharing it with the owners. Inside, it looks a little like you’d be living in your own private country B&B. Located about 18 minutes from the Amtrak station in Hudson. Beds: 3. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 1,400. Lot Size: 14 acres. Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hours, 25 minutes.

We only get to see the exterior, front porch, and attic in the provided pictures, but this Cape about 10 minutes from the village of New Paltz has nearly a full acre of grassy, rolling side-yard, which makes it feel country enough for us. Also includes a stone patio. Speaking of the attic, it’s finished, so you’re getting an extra room to go along with the other two bedrooms. Beds: 2. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 1,432. Lot Size: .72 acres. Distance to Brooklyn: 1 hour, 43 minutes.

The fact that three of our four picks are in the Gardiner/New Paltz area was completely on accident, but it’s not a bad area: Less than two hours from NYC, about 15 minutes from the Poughkeepsie train station, close to nature trails (Wallkill Rail Trail and Mohonk/Minnewaska), and convenient to both more upstate points as well as downstate destinations. And if you like the feeling of a rambling farmhouse, this four bedroom Victorian in Gardiner might fit the bill. Tenant rents the main part of the house, which has 4 beds/2 baths and includes a fenced-in corner lot (at least, according to the Google Streetview it’s fenced). The whole property is a three-family with separate entrances for the other two residences. That might be a deal breaker for some. Beds: 4. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 3,836. Lot Size: 3.3 acres. Distance to Brooklyn: 1 hour, 43 minutes.
