  1. I think most people get married for non-practical reasons. Some marry for immigration, some for taxes (if one partner works and the other doesn’t, or if there is a big difference in the salaries of the partners); some to legitimize children, some for inheritance, some for insurance. But I think most people get married because they want to commit to spending their lives together, a very romantic notion. And yes, Dave, divorce laws apply.

  2. The Conservative Party (Benson, weren’t you an officer of the NYS Conservative Party?) said it would not support any Republican who voted for gay marriage. This was a big threat because Conservative Party votes are more than the margin of victory for many NYS Republican legislators.

    • Sen. Mark Grisanti, R-Buffalo: “Mr. Grisanti said, adding, “I cannot deny a person, a human being, a taxpayer, a worker, the people of my district and across this state, the State of New York, and those people who make this the great state that it is the same rights that I have with my wife.”

Both Dems and republicans need more like this guy- and please. Put Diaz in a garbage bag and dump him.

  3. You think most straight people don’t do the same thing? Probably even more so- the Haberman piece makes an interesting comment- that the gay couples who will get married have usually been together far longer before marriage than straights who always had the option to marry and divorce with such relative ease.
