Open House Round Up

By the way, did anyone else make it to the open house at 41 Monroe Street yesterday? The top two floors were not open but we thought the house looked pretty solid. Given how nice the street is, we bet it’ll be snapped up this week. We were also struck by an unusual sight: The owners had turned an old marble fireplace into part of the stone walkway in the garden. Never seen that before. Any other stand-out open houses this weekend?

Regarding question on crime/safety in BedStuy. The neighborhood is much too large to characterize….and to overgeneralize is mistake.
Without doubt trouble spots and general crime stats are higher than many other precincts in NYC. I visited friends that just bought house there – not in fancier area but very close to Bushwick and block it seemed comfortable. Modest houses and fairly intact.
I wonder what one really means when they ask ‘Is it safe?’ It calls to mind that recent local parody ‘Modern Gentrifier’ with the Headline ‘Bed-Stuy; Still Too Black?’
I realize I’m opening a can of worms here, but since this is a forum where people can choose to post anonymously, perhaps people will be able to voice their true feelings.
Obviously, moving to a safe neighborhood is a thoroughly valid point (NY magazine recently rated Bed-Stuy pretty high on the hypothetical housing bubble risk factor scale due to that ‘stubborn crime’ thing), but I guess the question got my back up. 41 Monroe is the closest one can possibly get to the Clinton Hill dividing line, how far in is too far to not feel safe?
Apologies in advance for the gentrification bitterness(and if this topic has already been discussed here), but would really like to hear your opinions. How do people feel overall about what’s going on in Bed-Stuy right now?
It is so funy…. broker says:
Just minutes of pleasant walk to Clinton / Washington for A/C line, to Lafayette Ave for G (Clinton-Washington stop)
it is obviuosly much closer to Classon on G and Franklyn on C
We have no particular knowledge of the immediate neighborhood other than the fact that it is only a block or so from the Clinton Hill border–and only a few blocks from our house. The block seemed very stable, family-oriented, no signs of drugs or homelessness (which is more than we can say for our stretch of Clinton Hill). Attractive front yards are always a good sign in our book–and there were several on this block. Like a lot of Bed Stuy (and CH, FG, & Boerum Hill, for that matter), things vary greatly block to block, but our sense is that this is one of the nicer areas. In the end, though, there’s no substitute for just taking a walk yourself.
Brownstoner,
What’s this neighborhood like in terms of safety? The house looks great, and you say the block is nice? How about the rest of the neighborhood?
Hmmm. Guess everyone went to the beach this weekend!
