Who is that guy?
Since I didn’t see a way to post on the curbed site in response to the Sunset Park article I decided to post here.
I think the “insider’s guide” written on Sunset Park does a great job of digging up every negative aspect that they can on the neighborhood and ignoring all the good aspects.
The highlights of the neighborhood they mention are the BQE and the proposed recycling center. This would be like describing Park Slope as a place with a smelly canal and a homeless shelter in the armory. This is not what Sunset Park is about.
It’s safe to say that, like Park Slope, the desirable areas are between 4th Ave and 8th Ave, the BQE and recycling plant are on 3rd and 2nd Ave, an industrial zone like in PS.
What the neighborhood does have going for it is a newly renovated park with a community center and the most amazing views of the NY Harbor and lower Manhattan. It has beautiful housing stock, brownstones and limestones, that are still affordable in a safe, quite neighborhood. Sunset Park is one of the largest historical districts on the East Coast (as listed in the National Register of Historic Places.) Brownstones can be had in the 6-700k range and a 2 BR co-op can be had for around $200k. Nice neighborhood, nice park, (relatively) inexpensive housing, this is why people are moving there.
I think the article on curbed was irresponsibly negative and not a true representation of what this neighborhood offers.
