If not historic designation, they may not have found the house/block so charming to begin with and wouldn’t have bought there anyway.
Same article in the ‘Hunt’ also described house on Warren as ‘chopped up’ in apts. I saw same that house and seemed to me was orig built as apt bldg – each floor very spacious with 3 bedrooms. And was never ‘chopped up’.

I would think that most people in closely spaced urban neighborhoods would PREFER to buy in an historic district precisely because it prevents adding unsightly “improvements” (such as additional floors) which reduce the value of adjoining property.
