Bedford Stuyvesant’s ascendency has just reached a new level: Thirty-year-old British designer Sarah Morgan has named an entire line of handbags after her new nabe. The Bed-Stuy collection includes such pieces as the Bedford (shown), the Putnam and the Madison. She says that the designs reflect the diversity of Bed-Stuy itself where her friends are African-American, West Indian, Italian and Colombian. “The neighborhood is still predominantly African-American,” she said, “but we all feel accepted.”

So then the safety and well being of your children is not a top priority then?
The language on this blog is no worse (or even better) anytime you have random strangers posting semi-anonmously .. if you read enough blogs/list-srvs you always see this stuff. (the worst is urbanbaby.com — and I do have children).
Actually, Bugaboos and hip hop dress BOTH bug the sh** out of me
“The part of this thread that made me laugh the most was about what would happen if “my children” found a severed head in the backyard…isn’t this over-obsession with protecting “our children” gotten out of hand these days?”
This spoken by someone who doesn’t have children. Trust me, once you do your priorities change and your children’s well being becomes a pretty high priority
Doesn’t it reveal a person’s own prejudice to say that looking at Birkenstocks and Bugaboos would “bug the sh*t out of them”? I’m no fan of ugly sandles either, but if someone said looking at guys with hip hop clothes on bugged them, people would say they were racist? What’s up with all the inflamatory commentary on this blog?
My brother-in-law, the social psychologist, told me that people perceive that a neighborhood is changing when the population of the “new” group reaches approx. 14%. These studies were done on “white flight,” but most likely it works the other way around.
I’m sure FG and CH have surpassed this “tipping point” by now and Bed-Stuy is getting close. Racism is visual, and all those Bierkenstocks and Bugaboos would bug the sh*t out of me too.
The head in the bag comment is ridiculous. . . wasn’t the rest of the body found in williamsburg. I guess all those trendy/wealthy/artistic types should run for the hills (as long as its not clinton hills–its proximity to bedstuy might result in the discovery of human heads).
I think it’s an overstatement to say that you are probably safer in BedSty than most areas of LI. I think most Brooklynites understand that there are some risks associated with moving into a neighborhood that has in the not so distant past been associated with violent crime. That same level of risk is just not there in most suburban towns.
Not to say that bad stuff doesn’t happen in the ‘burbs – I lived through Amy Fisher, I know.
Regarding finding the severed head. This can happen anywhere. Look at the recent murder of the girl in Long Island by her neighbor. Probably safer in BS than LI.
