The ultimate tool in a New York City designer’s toolbox? Where space is at a minimum, “multi-functional furniture, especially a great sleeper sofa, is a must do,” says Susie Kurkowski, owner of Brooklyn home boutique Items of Interest.

Kurkowski says the American Leather Comfort Sleeper is “absolutely the best.” The platform bed opens in three sections to be completely level. “There are no bars and no springs.”

This isn’t your grandparents’ sofa bed — “it’s a completely different animal,” she says.

An interior designer, Kurkowski uses the sleeper sofa as a problem-solving tool. “There is one model that is the perfect city sofa: a sectional that can be as small as 74 inches wide that includes a queen sleeper and storage for the bedding. It hits every need for city living.”

Not only do New Yorkers use them in the living room, a guest room/home office, or a studio, says Kurkowski, “we have people who buy them when they have a child in a one-bedroom apartment — the parents sleep on the sofa bed in the living room every night.”

Made in Texas, American Leather sofa beds come in multiple styles and in any size, from a small chair that turns into a twin, to a queen, to a larger sectional.

American Leather is having their annual (10 percent off) sleeper sofa sale until October 1, 2018. As a special promotion, Kurkowski is offering, gratis, furniture layouts to those interested in the American Leather sleeper sofa.

She will create a floor plan for customers on the spot, not only showing the sleeper sofa but also the entire living room with the other furniture elements.

She is also able to give expert advice to her customers on fabric selection and care.
