What’s it like getting around Brooklyn using car2go? BlankSlate writer Jeff Scherer planned a busy Saturday in Brooklyn in order to find out.

We had an ambitious day ahead of us, my wife and I. It was a beautiful day fall Saturday — my birthday, in fact — and we were determined to spend it well. One thing we didn’t want to do was to spend half the day on the subway. car2go to the rescue!

Our first destination that morning was the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (or BARC), an animal shelter in Williamsburg, to walk some of the dogs who are available for adoption. To get from our house in Carroll Gardens to Wythe Avenue and North 1st Street in Williamsburg by subway would take at least 45 minutes, assuming the G train was running on time, including a 15-minute walk from the station. But we wanted to get there before all the good dogs were taken, so we checked our car2go app and grabbed a nearby car.

We are car2go newbies, so we were pleasantly surprised that the dashboard talked us through the whole process.

The process was easy, and we were parked outside the shelter 20 minutes later. The car, by the way, handles very well — even on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

Because we got there early, we got Apollo. As you can see, he was very happy to spend the morning in McCarren Park. (As of this writing, he is still available for adoption. Snap him up!)

It was great walking around our old neighborhood. This mural near the tiny Grand Ferry Park stopped us in our tracks.

We decided to reward our good deed with a hearty brunch at Egg. Since it was my birthday, my wife was willing to brave the line to get in. It wasn’t that long, for Egg, but it was longer than our car2go trip! (And totally worth the wait.)

Our bellies full, we strolled up Bedford to… Vinnie’s Pizza? (As odd as it sounds, we went there in search of one of their vegan whoopie pies.) Then it was time to head back to Carroll Gardens for recuperation/videogames/naps. Fortunately, there was another car2go two blocks away, and we were home in no time, parking a couple doors down from our brownstone.

After a lazy afternoon at home, we got dressed up for a dance performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music — Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company performing “Sadeh21.” It was a jaw-dropping performance — one which we might have arrived late for if we hadn’t had a car2go waiting on our block, ready to take us to Fort Greene in a matter of minutes. (We’re not always great about leaving on time.)

Afterwards, we took our car2go home — the same one we drove to Fort Greene — and squeezed into a tiny parking space on our block. We finished off the night with some birthday karaoke with friends.
