Prep work has commenced on a co-op the Fifth Avenue Committee is constructing at the intersection of Atlantic and South Portland avenues. As we discussed back in June, the housing authority plans to erect a 10-story building on a vacant lot that’s a few hundred feet away from the nucleus of Atlantic Yards. On a recent walk-by we noticed that workers have started clearing the space in advance of heavy lifting. The co-op is slated to have 80 units, some of which will be affordable to low- and middle-income residents, and some of which will be market rate. Thoughts on how this’ll play when it’s facing Miss Brooklyn?

it can’t look worse than the projects a few blocks down atlantic. i can’t believe they’re finally getting somewhere on this! that’s been an empty lot for years!
this affordable housing will be worthless and noone will move into it due to…the ATLANTIC YARDS EFFECT…
No matter WHAT goes there, that plot will be infinitely better than it was the mid 1980s, when it was an abandoned lot that was at one point commandeered by a homeless man who built an “amusement park” – complete with signs and “rides” – in the space. The NY Daily News did a story on the guy.
