Last week the nonprofit Concern for Independent Living opened the Rochester Avenue Apartments, a 65-unit supportive housing development in Crown Heights. The building, on St. Marks between Rochester and Buffalo avenues, once housed St. Mary’s Hospital until it shuttered in 2005. It was purchased by Concern for Independent Living in 2008. The facility has studio apartments as well as multiple lounges, a computer room, an exercise room, a dining hall and a rooftop garden. The units are for low-income individuals recovering from mental illness, including formerly homeless individuals and those exiting the state residency system. Comfort Foods, an area business that provides employment opportunities for the formerly homeless, will provide daily meals for Rochester residents.
