Joe Sitt, best known as a major landholder on Coney Island, is again making headlines for his plans to build a mall at a bus lot in Bensonhurst. Thor Equities, Mr. Sitt’s development company, is hoping to create a 214,000-square-foot shopping center with BJ’s Wholesale Club and three other, as yet unsigned, retailers, reports The Observer. Thor has filed for a rezoning of the site and is going through due process with the Department of City planning. Thor has also proposed a BJ’s at the former Revere sugar refinery in Red Hook, across from Ikea. GMAP

  1. What is it with this dude and BJ’s? I hate stores you have to join- although I visited a BJ’s recently while in the burbs and suddenly there was all this stuff in front of me that I never knew I wanted/needed before then. The food was pretty sucky though.

  2. I really hope this happens. This has been talked about for a while, and no doubt the grocery workers’ union will muster all their might to defeat it. I prefer BJ’s to Costco since they have a much greater variety in stock – instead of ten kinds of breakfast cereal they’ll have forty. Right now Brooklyn’s only BJ’s is out by Starrett City, a little far afield for me.

  3. Bensonhurst???? Red Hook? Hw abut Bed Stuy/Crwn Heights? The armry wuld be a great place for a large retailer like that. It would have the vibe of Trader Joe’s with the vaulted ceilings etc. and there could be a prgram set up where bulk goods could be donated to the homeless shelter or maybe even prvide employment opportunities…………………..way better idea than an intake center
