bike-congestion-0610.jpg
This was a first for us: En route to the office this morning we encountered actual congestion in the bike lane along Navy Street, though the strikingly homogeneous group of riders remained quite civil as they pulled up to the intersection and waited, law-abidingly, for the light to turn green. As we approached Sands Street, everyone else made a left towards the Manhattan Bridge as we continued on towards Dumbo.

  1. DH — It’s funny right… folks that never ride a bike making comments on how you *should* ride.

Out of one side of their mouths they are pissed off that they have to share the road with annoying bikes… but then out of the other side they have contempt for the actions of cyclists that actually REDUCE this friction.

Have you ever noticed that bike lanes become dotted lines at intersections? It’s for turning cars! Would you prefer me and my bicycle wait for the light there and prevent you and your car from moving into the “turning lane” — OR would you prefer me to stop a little further up?

  2. You’re right dh, I’m not as thick headed as I come across. As a pedestrian (can you believe it, I actually walk instead of driving my car as much), I’ve been hit by a car that ran a red light. I’m a real stickler for vehicles obeying traffic rules.
As a driver, I want vehicles to signal when turning / changing lanes, no one to talk or text on phone when driving, not to speed, not to cross a solid white line on the highway, be courteous, etc. etc.
I would also like cyclists to do the same. It would be a safer environment for everyone.

“I highly suggest you go for a bike ride one of these days.”
um, I don’t know how to ride a bike.
