This two-bed, two-bath rental is at 84 Eagle Street, a unique-looking building in Greenpoint. We like the window setup, but other than that the apartment feels pretty standard. Sales began here in 2007, and the finishes look shiny enough. The rent is $2,850, which is definitely on the high side for an apartment off the Greenpoint Ave. G stop. Any thoughts on this one?

  1. I commute from Greenpoint Ave to Midtown 48th and 6th.
It takes about 30 minutes each day G to the E/M.
4 subway stops. I’ve been doing it for over a year and I haven’t run into any train issues during commuting times.

I recently discovered that from Lincoln Center to Greenpoint in a yellow cab at night comes out to about $13(+tip). Which surprised me… I’ve done it a few times via 59th st bridge.
Feels like I’ve paid much more than that to go to certain places all within Manhattan.

  2. While I’m quite happy for no more newcomers to come to Greenpoint the worn line about the G being no good is just plain wrong. Its a stop to the 7 or the E/V. The 7 is in Grand central in a jiffy, its basically the closest a subway can get to a travelator. The commute from the Greenpoint G to midtown is nothing. In fact its not long enough for me to read a book chapter so now I’ve taken to reading magazine articles. The G is excellent in commuting hours, I think it must be people relying on it outside commuting hours that hate it, and that’s understandable. I take a cab if I’m out in the city late – they don’t mind going to Greenpoint because a lot of the cab co’s are based there or next door in LIC.

BTW, to 50th and 8th being 47 minutes is codswallop. I used to commute 50th and sixth. The Wall St. time sounds about right.

  3. wine lover,

While I agree in principle, any way you spin it, a two-seat commute is a deal killer for many of us.

Per Google maps & Hop Stop:

To Wall Street is 58 minutes.
To 50th and 8th (midtown) is 47 minutes.
To 30 Rock (midtown) is 41 minutes.
To Downtown Brooklyn is 40 minutes.

Acceptable range, but personally hate any commute that requires a transfer. Given the frequent MTA service interruptions, one is bound to be rerouted/delayed.

  4. if you work in midtown, this is a quick G train ride to LIC then switch to midtown train. much closer to midtown than anyone posting from brownstone / south brooklyn. most comments on this site about greenpoint make no sense. it’s like you’ve never seen a map. agree that brooklyn hts is closer to the financial district than greenpoint, but it’s not closer to midtown than greenpoint and neither is any other brownstone brooklyn nabe. for union sq/chelsea, B62 or G to the L. again, it’s not long. i’ve had to be in greenpoint in the mornings occasionally, and i take the B62 to Broadway to the JMZ to go downtown.

it’s a modern 2 bed for under $3k. same sized apts in my northside WB condo building rent for about $3600 ish, so discount for Greenpoint already in place.

for a family with a kid going to a greenpoint school, then this is not a big rent with 2 incomes with an apt in a great school zone.

  5. That is correct, dh – on all counts.

Last time I went to Greenpoint was to see an avant-garde play written/directed by Josh Cohen (Gasland). We took a bus from the LES (the trip being narrated as part of the setup). Kind of felt like an adventure to Beirut.

Sunday I’m going to an Oscar party in the same performance space. If he wins, it might go on for days.
