houseMost New Yorkers are pretty used to tales of landlords evicting tenants in the pursuit of profit maximization. But even the most hardened free-marketeer must have raised his eyebrows at yesterday’s report of two elederly sisters being kicked out of the Cobble Hill townhouse where they grew up by their nephew, Joseph DeLeonibus. Adding another layer of intrigue was the listing for the Cheever Place property on Corcoran: “House is being offered for $999,999, without seeing it, without inspecting it, must close in 30 days, must be all cash and must take tenants in place.” Sounds a little desperate to us. There must be more to the story.

  1. What I wonder about also is how the buyer of this place will fare. I have no idea why someone would want to be involved with this – knowing they displaced these women – feud or not. Karma?
My cousins live on the block so it will be interesting to hear about the kind of reception the new owners get.

  2. Good lord. What is the neighborhood coming to? It was never like this. All that you people care about is $$$. I can’t believe how hard-hearted some of you are. Let the old ladies stay for whatever time they have left. If they did mooch, so what? Let them be. What’s the rush now? The nephew has some gambling debts he needs to pay? Over-extended credit cards? Can’t pay for the luxury car? It’s a very sad commentary on our society. Throw away the elderly, what good are they but a drain on our wallets and an impediment to profit. Hope it happens to you someday.

  3. You call him a landlord – as if he invested some hard earned money in any of this.
I call him worthless scum – dumping his family onto goverment dole – and inheriting million bucks tax free thanks to our wonderful tax code.

  4. Thanks, Shahn. “Snidely Whiplash” was the name at the tip of my tongue seeing that picture.

JoshK–Why not? The LL is family, and this is not or shouldn’t be, a souless business arrangement. If he kicks the aunts out you know it will wind up being the taxpayers’ burden. Maybe that’s how he’s rationalizing it–they’ll be cared for one way or another.

  5. I’m surprised he didn’t go for the full curly-ended moustache we expect from that kind of villian. I for one grew mine out and curled the edges when I was throwing people out of their homes for a living. 😛

  6. it is not landlords tenant dispute there are no leases, no rent control.
It is family business. This guy should wait couple years and let them die in pace and then sell this place after just out of respect for his family.
