It’s looking like one of the major projects planned for the BAM Cultural District is on its way to becoming a reality. A reader sent in the pic on the left today, writing: “Permits are not yet posted, but it looks like they are starting on the Theatre for a New Audience. It is creating a bit of a parking puzzle for the lease holders of the parking lot.” Indeed, the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership’s write-up on the facility, rendered at right, says construction “began” this spring. The 299-seat theater, designed by Hugh Hardy, is coming to Ashland between Fulton and Lafayette.

Why does a theater building need a curb cut?
architect66. I passed by last night. It looks like permits for more than a curb cut are posted, and that they are ready to go.
Unfortunately, it looks like the building will need to wait for some time before moving ahead. Recent DOB activity shows a new curb cut approval, but no new building. The last plan exam on the building was in 2007, and there is a little bureaucratic minuet that has to be danced before the project can be reinstated and the plans reviewed. Natch, this involves the payment of additional fees to the city.
Definitely don’t think that area needs more towers. I figured the theater wouldn’t be much higher than Mark Morris, but wasn’t positive.
I think this is a low-rise building (3 or 4 stories). I think the towers on either end of the lot are on hold.
Fantastic! I saw their ‘Merchant’ 2 weeks ago (with Murray Abraham) and it was wonderful! ANd cheap, too considering the cast ($40).
I’m told by the Downtown Bklyn Partnership that it’s supposed to be 60-70 feet, similar in height to the Mark Morris building next door. The towers (if they are ever built) will be elsewhere on the site. http://www.dbpartnership.org/utils/imgshow.aspx?id=148.
me too, seller of theater is crazed and way way overpriced
I wish BAM would buy the Slave Theater
